The detective division is responsible for thorough investigation of major crimes in the community and crimes that did not result in an immediate arrest (crimes including, but not limited to, homicides, rapes, assaults, burglaries, larcenies, forgeries, auto thefts, etc). Detectives follow up on cases that are to be prosecuted and continue the investigation prior to presenting the case and charges to the Magistrate / District Attorney's Office.

The department has specialized detective units that focus on juvenile incidents and drug activity, as well as a Crime Scene Investigator to process crime scenes and evidence.
